English Premier League football teams Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United will be competing in Perth ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The London Derby will take place at Optus Stadium on July 18, as announced today by Tourism Minister Roger Cook and Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman.
West Ham will also play against Perth Glory on July 15.
From July 22 to August 3, Perth is set to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, meaning 11 international teams will compete in Perth over the span of 20 days.
Mr Templeman said Perth has had a great summer of sport and moving into winter more events will emerge.
“It’s a great time to be in Perth and it’s a great time to be Minister for Sport because everything is coming at us,” he said.
“It continues to demonstrate that Perth is the centre of a whole range of things including football and I think all Western Australians and visitors to our state can look forward to a great match between these 100 year old rivals from the premier league and the friendly between West Ham and our own Perth Glory.”
Mr Cook said the London Derby between the two EPL teams will be a major event for WA.
“If you’re a West Ham supporter or a Tottenham supporter in Sydney or Melbourne, there’s only one way you’ll be able to see these teams live this year and that is coming to Perth for this great event,” Mr Cook said.
“This is an exclusive event to Western Australia and represents a huge opportunity for us to continue to maximise our major events tourism budget and calendar to make sure people understand that Western Australia is the place to come to see great sporting events.”
Former England international player and coach Ledley King said it was a pleasure to be in Perth on behalf of Tottenham Hotspur to announce the event.
“The reception and the hospitality that we’ve received has been amazing,” he said.
“I know the team are looking forward to coming back out to Australia for the third time in eight years and for many it will be the first time in Perth, so I know how much they’re really looking forward to putting on a show and performing in front of our fans out here.”
Mr King said it was important for the team to engage with their fans and immerse themselves in the culture and community of Perth.
In 2022, Perth hosted four EPL teams with Manchester United, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Crystal Palace playing at Optus Stadium.
This event generated $77 million and attracted 4,700 visitors from beyond WA.
“It’s wonderful to see these great events coming to Western Australia,” Mr Cook said.
“We know it drives visitation, we know that it showcases Western Australia on the world stage and we know that it continues to make Perth a great place to live, work, study and play.”
Pre-sale tickets open tomorrow and tickets for general admission go on sale on March 28.
