RAC reveals plans for Coral Bay resort

WA insurer RAC has unveiled its $70 million plan to transform Coral Bay’s Ningaloo Reef Resort in what it describes as one of the most significant tourism projects in the state’s history.

The new resort, penciled in to open before the 2027 peak tourist season, will expand capacity from 160 to 270 people.

It will feature panoramic views of the famous bay, gardens, a new pool, restaurant and lounge area, and function spaces.

RAC Group chief executive Rob Slocombe said the new resort would only have a slightly larger footprint than its predecessor.

“We will introduce a great mix of new accommodation, from hotel rooms to one, two and three bedroom units,” he said.

“We want to enhance what makes Coral Bay such a special place.

“The minimalistic design of our buildings allows the breathtaking beauty of the natural surroundings to truly shine and be celebrated.”

RAC will splash money on a solar system to power the resort and will install amenities which do not require gas.

Electric vehicle chargers will also be installed.

The news comes after RAC on Tuesday submitted a development application to the Shire of Carnarvon which will put the plans out for public comment.

Shire of Carnarvon president Eddie Smith told Business News on Monday the new resort would bring “something special” to Coral Bay.

“This has been in the wings for a number of years with previous owners as well and RAC has taken the bull by the horns and seen the benefit of doing the job,” he said.

“Coral Bay is on the world map, RAC has recognised that and they are going to build a resort that is going to complement that status.”

RAC on Sunday called last drinks at the Coral Bay Hotel ahead of the resort’s closure.

The $70 million bill comprises the $55 million resort build and $15 million village built to house workers. Construction is expected to take six months longer than previously expected.
